A highlight of any visit to Khiva is a tour of the old city walls (Itchan Kala). Go at the end of the day to enjoy gorgeous views of the minarets, which throw their shadows over the flat, rammed-earth roofs and brick cupolas of the mosques and madrasas. Basking in the sun, the terracotta city takes on rosy hues that you could spend hours admiring from the watchtowers of the wall, which round off this 2km-long tour of the city.
