These two massive Buddhas carved out of the cliff face during the Heian period (794-1185) are listed National cultural treasures. The site is reached along a steep stone path that can be a bit precarious, but which offers magnificent views. To the left, standing at over 8m/26ft, Fudo-Myo, the god of fire, offers us a shy smile, while next to him, the cosmic Buddha Dainichi Nyorai, 7m/22ft high, is rather more serious. Further up the trail stands a small wooden temple.
